Basic Wine Tasting Steps
Follow these basic wine tasting steps and you will have an enjoyable wine tasting experience. Always start with the proper glass. Tuliped-shaped glasses are the best for tasting. Start with white wine and progress to red wine. Do not overfill your glass. Less is more for wine tasting. Look, before you taste.
- Hold the glass by the stem, tilt away from you, and examine the wine color against a white background.
- Swirl the wine in the glass to coat the sides.
- Gently sniff the wine. You will detect a progression of aromas. Try to identify the different smells.
- Taste the wine. Take a small sip and swish around in your mouth. Try to asess the balance between acidity, sweetness, and bitterness. You may swallow or spit out the wine. Take a note of lingering aftertaste. A good wine will have a clean, long lasting flavor.
