Memorial Day, Grilling, and Wine

Posted On 05-22-2008 , 11:50 PM

The summer season begins this weekend with Memorial Day and weather is forecasted to be very nice in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.  This means, dust off those grills and fire them up!  Hamburgers, hot dogs, ribs, steaks, seafood, and of course WINE.  Several local wine shops that I frequent in the Washington DC area having excellent sales (some are offering 30% off).  So visit Chevy Chase Wine & Spirits, Paul's of Chevy Chase, and Pearson's Wine & Spirits to get your summer started right and pick up that perfect bottle of wine.

Here are some recommendations for you to try:

Burgers: Wines that stand up to the flavors, toppings, & ingredients in a burger.
Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Monastrell, Malbec, Syrah, Zinfandel (w/ barbecue sauce)

Fish: Wines that are medium bodied that will retain a little acidity.
Albarino, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir, Viognier, White Burgundy

Shellfish: Wines that are light, crisp, high acidity.
Albarino, Cava, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc

Steaks: Wines that are rich and complex.
Cabernet, Grenache, Merlot, Syrah

I hope you enjoy your Memorial Holiday and try some new wines this summer.

Pontecilla Tempranillo 2006 - Calatayud

Posted On 05-04-2008 , 7:38 PM

Spain is continuing to produce wines of excellent quality at an affordable price.  Pontecilla Tempranillo 2006 represents wines of this quality and price.  Pontecilla 2006 has a deep purple color, light berry fruit and a hint of vanilla on the nose and palate.  There was a little spice and a smooth finish.

Pontecilla 2006 is recommended to be enjoyed with meat or chorizo (a pork sausage spiced with garlic and peppers).  I didn't have chorizo, but I found
Pollo Asado Autentico at Trader Joe's.  This is thinly sliced chicken breast seasoned with black pepper, garlic, onion flakes, cilantro, paprika, crushed chiles, lime powder, cayenne, ground cumin, bell peppers, and laurel.  The chicken is pre-packaged and marinading in all of these ingredients.  I emptied the entire packaged in the skillet and sauteed for less than 10 minutes until it was done.

I purchased Pontecilla 2006 from Paul's of Chevy Chase for an excellent price of $7.49.

Wine: Pontecilla
Vintage: 2006
Region: Calatayud
Grape: Tempranillo
Cost: $7.49
